I was trying to get rid of the last of my 35mm Kodachrome and 126 Instamatic cartridges before the end of 2009 when they stop processing Kodachrome altogether so I took this (train) trip to the Flagstaff, Arizona area to photograph some of the interesting geology in the vicinity.
At the start of the Lava Flow Trail.
Clouds: my ally, my adversary (photographically speaking)
Sunset Crater.
Looking down into a fissure.
A "squeeze-up" in the Bonito Lava Flow.
Looking east towards San Francisco Mountain. Humphreys Peak (12,637 feet) is the highest of several on this mountain which is a stratovolcano that blew its top like Mt. St. Helens.
Four hundred year old fallen ponderosa pine tree.
Small splatter cone.
Agglutinate mound or pile of pyroclastic material.
Many of the standing dead trees reminded me of totem poles with icons of raptors carved into them.
Large splatter cone damaged over the years by visitors climbing and sitting on it.
